I Do Not Trust Your Data… and Neither Should You! 🤔

All data is GARBAGE 🗑️ until proven otherwise.

This holds true for Medical Claims, Pharmacy Claims Data, Transparency Data, EMR Data, APCD data, Third Party Data, Benchmark Data, CMS Data... etc.

One of the most critical things I've learned in my career in healthcare is that managing this aspect can be incredibly challenging, especially when timelines are tight, resources are limited, and expectations are sky-high ⏳💰📈.

Consider these crucial questions:

  1. Do you have an acceptance process and criteria for any client or external datasets?
  2. Are there data quality metrics included with all deliverables?
  3. Do the metrics provide a complete overview of the data from raw files to deliverable?
  4. Do you have resources accountable for data quality?
  5. Must your data quality resources sign off before data is released externally?
  6. Do you have a formal change control process in place?
  7. Is a formal quality review and impact analysis completed and signed off before any changes go into production?
  8. Are post-mortems with action plans and responsible owners performed whenever there's a data quality issue?
  9. Is a data quality workgroup in place to ensure adherence to the process and that necessary development is being built?
  10. Is the workgroup creating test plans and use cases for all new development?
  11. Is there an executive steering committee guiding the workgroup and addressing any escalated issues?
  12. Lastly, does your CEO accept ultimate accountability for the quality of your organization's data?

Always remember, data is only as good as its quality control! ✅
